Rob Deering's Beat This

Neow-neow DOO-doo, neow-neow DOO-doo-dooo. The theme music heralds an hour of madcap fun in the latest quizzical offering from the guitar and brain of MC Rob Deering.

Enlisting two teams, one husband-and-wife pairing of Lucy Porter and Justin Edwards (Jeremy Lion or Ben Swain to those in the know) and the other Simon Evans and Nick Helm who throw themselves into some late-night comedy and prove adept at recognising mashed-up tunes, laugh at Deering’s brapping lips and take it all in good spirits. Trusty scorer Hannah (picked out of the audience) restores order and keeps The Public informed of its tally, and your humble reviewer (if he can speak in the third person without sounding pretentious) steps in early on by naming an A-ha song which isn’t Take on Me. It is clear I will enjoy the hour to come and, with the teams banging on a conga drum as and when they know the answer, so do the players.

Deering knows his music, and that comes across when he mashes seven songs in one, like a radio competition brought to life, and is a great MC in his quipping and catchphrases (“you’ll find out when you’re locked out”). If only Buzzcocks were like this now; indeed it could be, if Deering is offered the vacated presenter slot. Someone from the Beeb sign him up before he makes a podcast out of this…
