Alex Zane: Just One more Thing...

Alex Zane is a cool man. He has reinvented what is considered attractive with his camp sense of humour, feyness and messy hair. The TV presenter’s forte is his charisma and great interaction with the audience. With a knack for remembering names, the term ‘personal space’ is foreign to Zane and he joyfully gives hugs, sits on strangers’ knees and asks random questions to the odd late comer.  Although a genuinely nice guy, he has clearly fallen hard on comedic times since his days as a finalist on So You Think You’re Funny.

Zane regales his life at the bottom of the social ladder at school when he used to wear a trench coat and carry a briefcase like a mini-Colombo. Into war gaming as a lad (and still, maybe?), and having suffered through nasty lunches packed by his mum, Zane angrily rants about the age old drama of teenage angst and societal hierarchies. Luckily for Zane, he grew out of all that and became a poster boy for skinny nerdy boys everywhere.

Despite the aforementioned charisma, Zane stumbles a bit and, at times, is awkwardly at a loss for words. He desperately moves into dirty chat when the show starts to lull, and stays there until the end. While his dry sense of humour and general hipness makes for good television, as a stand-up comic Zane doesn’t have the material for laugh out loud, knee-slapping moments. The jokes seem recycled and dated, with silly toilet humour being the strongest point. At least he looks good and all the young T4 girls like him.
